How to Get More Visibility on Google

How to Get More Visibility on Google

What should small business owners do in January to get more visibility and enquiries from Google?

Start with the basics that directly affect whether customers can find and trust your business online:

  1. Ensure Google can actually see and index your key pages
  2. Update your Google Business Profile (hours, services, photos)
  3. Improve your website pages so they answer real customer questions in plain English, and
  4. Strengthen trust signals like reviews, testimonials, and clear contact details. These steps help you show up more often and turn that visibility into calls, messages, and sales.

If you’re a small business owner, you’ve probably noticed something over the last year: People are still “Googling”… but the way Google shows results has changed. And more customers are also using tools like ChatGPT to compare options, shortlist suppliers and decide who to contact.

That matters because it means visibility isn’t just about being “on page one” anymore.

Today, customers often want quick answers:

“Who’s the best near me?”
“Who’s open now?”
“How much will it cost?”
“Can they do what I need?”
“Are they trustworthy?”

Search engines are increasingly trying to answer those questions for people sometimes without them even clicking through to websites.

The good news? You don’t need to chase trends or obsess over marketing jargon.

You just need solid foundations: a website and online presence that clearly explains what you do, where you do it, and why someone should choose you.

This article gives you a straightforward January checklist plus a quick scorecard and a few templates to make it easier to take action.

How search is changing

Search engines are moving away from showing a simple list of links. Instead, they’re doing more of the “thinking” upfront:

  • showing map results
  • highlighting “best” options
  • pulling key info (services, opening hours, reviews)
  • summarising answers to common questions

Where does that information come from?

Usually from:

  1. Well-structured websites (clear pages, headings, service descriptions)
  2. Accurate business listings (especially Google Business Profile)
  3. Trust signals (reviews, consistent details, real-world proof)

If your website and listings are unclear, incomplete, or inconsistent, you can miss out even if your website looks professional.

Your 60-second Visibility Score (out of 10)

Before the checklist, do this quick self-check. Give yourself 0, 1, or 2 points for each:

  1. My main pages show up in Google (try the check below) (0–2)
  2. My Google Business Profile is complete and updated (0–2)
  3. I’ve had new reviews in the last 60 days (0–2)
  4. My website answers the questions customers ask (0–2)
  5. My site has clear trust signals and contact details (0–2)

What your score probably means

  • 0–4: You’re likely losing visibility and enquiries without realising
  • 5–7: You’re in a decent place, but there are easy wins available
  • 8–10: Strong foundations – you’re set up well to compete

If you scored 6 or less, the checklist below will likely give you quick improvements.

The Website & Visibility Checklist

1) Indexing Check: Can Google actually see your pages?

This is the most basic step and one of the most overlooked.

If Google can’t properly “see” your pages, you won’t show up consistently in search results, map results, or the summaries people are now reading.

Quick check (takes 30 seconds):

Go to Google and type: site:yourwebsite.co.uk

You should see a list of your pages.

What to look for

  • Do your key pages show up? (Home, Services, Contact, main service pages)
  • Are the pages showing the right titles?
  • Are important pages missing?

If you see very few pages, or the wrong pages are showing, it’s worth looking deeper.

Also worth checking (or asking someone to check for you):

  • Your sitemap is submitted in Google Search Console
  • Important pages aren’t set to “noindex” (hidden from search)
  • Your robots.txt isn’t accidentally blocking search engines

Note: We’ve seen websites that looked great visually, but the service pages were accidentally set to “noindex” after a redesign. The business wondered why enquiries dropped, it was simply because the pages stopped appearing in search.

2) Google Business Profile: More important than ever

For many local businesses, your Google Business Profile is now the first thing customers see.

In some searches, people won’t even reach your website, they’ll call, message, or visit based on your Google listing alone.

Check your Google Business Profile is:

  • Fully completed (services, categories, description, attributes)
  • Accurate opening hours (including bank holidays if relevant)
  • Using real photos (your premises, team, vehicles, your work – not stock images)
  • Actively collecting reviews
  • Up to date with services and service areas

Note: A business had outdated opening hours showing on Google. Customers arrived when they were shut, left frustrated, and it triggered negative reviews. That’s a visibility and reputation issue and it’s an easy fix.

3) Content that answers real customer questions (not “marketing content”)

This one is huge and it’s where you can stand out quickly.

Customers don’t search using marketing language. They search using real-life questions and problems.

So your website pages should make it easy for someone to understand, in seconds:

  • What you do
  • Who it’s for
  • Where you operate
  • What to do next (call, quote, book)

Quick check for your key pages

Pick your top 3 pages (often Home + 1–2 service pages). Ask:

  • Does this explain what we do in plain English?
  • Would a new customer understand it in 10 seconds?
  • Does it cover the questions people ask on the phone?
  • Does it make it easy to take the next step?

Tip that works well:

Add a short, clear answer near the top of a page, followed by more detail below.

Example:

Quick answer: We install and repair boilers across Bristol and surrounding areas, with same-week appointments available.
More detail: Here’s what’s included, what it costs, and how the process works…

This is good for humans and for how modern search pulls information.

4) Trust signals: small details that make people choose you

Visibility is only half the battle.

Even if someone finds you, they still need to feel confident enough to contact you.

Search engines and customers often look for similar “trust signals”:

  • clear contact details
  • consistent information
  • proof you do what you say you do

Trust checklist

  • Your phone number and email are easy to find (ideally in the header and footer)
  • Your address/service area is clear (even if you’re home-based)
  • Your business name, address, and phone number are consistent everywhere online
  • You have reviews and testimonials that mention specific services
  • Your website shows real proof: photos, case studies, results, accreditations, FAQs

We often see testimonials like “Great service!” which are nice but much stronger are testimonials that mention the service:

“Fixed our leaking roof within 48 hours” / “Handled our VAT return and saved us stress” / “Installed new signage and increased footfall.”

Those specifics help customers decide faster.

Two quick wins you can do this week

Fresh photos are a simple signal that you’re active and legitimate.
